"I'm so depressed!"
In today's world, we hear this phrase a lot. It is easy to throw the word depression here in there, but it also important to know what is truly depression and how debilitating it can be on people. Everyone experiences sadness here and there due to life events, however depression is ongoing and can occur randomly without any given reason.
Some symptoms of depression include:
- Loss of interest in things one used to enjoy
- Fatigue
- Persistent sad feelings and negative thoughts
- Feeling hopeless, worthless, useless
- Irritability
- Sleep problems
- Persistent Depressive Disorder
- Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
- Bipolar Disorder
- Postpartum Depression
- Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder
All of these illnesses can affect numerous people and can have an impact on everyday life. Depression is not a feeling but an actual health condition. It is also important to note that those who are affected by depression may not always show actual symptoms of being "sad".
Treatments:
Treating depression takes time and patience. Some treatments include therapy ranging from cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, counseling, problem-solving therapy, etc. There are also many anti-depressants out there.
