In this following post, I will share some interesting statistics I found about mental illnesses in the United States. All the sources can be found on the bottom of the post.

- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) affects millions of people from all walks of life. According to the NIMH, OCD affected 1.2% of adults in the U.S. in the past year. It currently affects approximately 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children in the U.S (ADAA)
- GAD affects 6.8 million adults, or 3.1% of the U.S. population, in any given year. Women are twice as likely to be affected (ADAA)
- Social Anxiety Disorder is equally common among men and women and typically begins around age 13. According to a 2007 ADAA survey, 36% of people with social anxiety disorder report experiencing symptoms for 10 or more years before seeking help (ADAA)
- Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13% (NAM)
- 70% of youth in juvenile justice systems have at least one mental health condition and at least 20% live with a serious mental illnes (NAMI)
- Individuals with mental illnesses such as anxiety usually deal with depression as well. This is known as a co-occuring illness.
- Women are most likely to be affected by panic disorder and depression.
- OCD is usually connected with PTSD or co-occur together
